Why Is My Water Bill Higher in the Summer?

You’re not alone, many of us use nearly twice as much water during the summer months without even realizing it! ☀️ Here’s why:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 More People = More Water
• Kids are home from school
• Houseguests & family visits
• More showers to cool off (a 10-minute shower can use ~25 gallons!)
• More drinking water
• Extra flushes (1.28–1.6 gallons each!)

🎉 More Gatherings = Even More Use
• Pool parties = refills (60–120 gallons daily depending on size!)
• Sprinklers used for play
• Laundry loads piling up (12+ gallons/load)

💡 Summer fun can come with higher water use – being aware is the first step to staying water-wise!

Let’s keep the good times flowing without wasting water. 🌊

Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District Receives Statewide Excellence in Technology Award – 2025

Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District Receives Statewide Excellence in Technology Award

Beaumont, CA — The Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District (BCVWD) has been honored with the 2025 Excellence in Technology Award by the California Special Districts Association (CSDA), recognizing the District’s leadership in innovation, cybersecurity, and community stewardship.

Awarded at the CSDA Annual Conference

The award was presented during the CSDA Annual Conference in Monterey, where BCVWD Board Vice President Lona Williams accepted the recognition on behalf of the District. Williams described the experience as “both humbling and an honor,” adding, “With just under 50 employees, standing among hundreds of other agencies made me incredibly proud of our staff’s dedication.”

Innovation, Security, and Stewardship

The CSDA award highlights BCVWD’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its technology infrastructure and safeguard customer data. Vice President Williams emphasized the community impact: “This award shows our community that every investment in technology is about stewardship. It protects customer information, safeguards our water supply, and reinforces that security and safety are priorities in every decision we make.”

United in Service

Williams also reflected on the sense of connection among fellow districts: “What struck me most was the warm support from so many other districts—water, fire, parks, and beyond. It reminded me that, despite our different challenges, we are united in our mission of serving our communities.”

For BCVWD, the award reflects more than progress in IT—it represents growth across all departments. “Our staff is learning, improving, and taking pride in their work every day— and this award is proof of that commitment,” Williams said.

About the CSDA Excellence in Technology Award

CSDA’s Excellence in Technology Award is given to only one special district each year, highlighting outstanding innovation in technology, improved efficiency, enhanced customer service, and strengthened cybersecurity practices. Learn more at CSDA.net.

🚧 Capital Improvement Project Updates – Investing in Water Reliability 💧

At BCVWD, we’re committed to keeping you informed on the progress of our infrastructure projects that strengthen the reliability and efficiency of your water service.

🔹 Well 1A Replacement – This project is nearing its next milestone!
Crews are currently flushing the new well and expect to complete this process within the next few weeks. After that, we will move forward with designing the discharge head and configuring piping to connect to the Transmission System. Whether this well supplies potable or non-potable water will depend on testing results, which are ongoing.

“These projects are perfect examples of how the District is planning for both today and tomorrow,” stated Board Vice President Lona Williams. “The Well 1A Replacement will give us greater flexibility in how we manage water supplies, especially as we await results that will help us determine the safest and best use of that source. And with the B-Line Pipeline now online, we’re already seeing improvements in our system’s ability to meet demand and move water more efficiently.

🔹 B-Line Transmission Pipeline – Construction is complete!
The pipeline has been connected to the distribution system and was officially online as of July 23. This new line will improve flow, support growing demand, and enhance system performance across the region.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to deliver safe, dependable water, now and into the future.

Beauty That Saves Water

Looking to cut back on your water use without giving up a beautiful yard? Native and drought-tolerant plants are a smart, sustainable alternative to grass—and they help cool your space better than rocks or cement.

Here are 5 water-wise plants perfect for the Beaumont area and much of Southern California:

  • California Fuchsia (Epilobium canum) – Bright red flowers that attract hummingbirds and thrive in the heat.
  • Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) – Elegant, low-maintenance ornamental grass that adds movement and texture.
  • Cleveland Sage (Salvia clevelandii) – Fragrant, purple-flowering shrub with pollinator appeal and very low water needs.
  • Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) – A native evergreen with red berries in winter; great for birds and privacy.
  • California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) – Long-blooming, hardy shrub that supports local pollinators.

🌱 These plants are not only water-efficient, but they also support local wildlife and help reduce your water bill—a win for your wallet and the environment.

Project Spotlight: Investing in Reliable Water Infrastructure

We’re excited to highlight a key infrastructure project currently underway: the construction of a Non-Potable Water Pressure Regulating and Metering Station near Palmer Ave. and Armour Ave. This project, part of our 2600 Zone to 2400 Zone system, includes the installation of a flow meter to measure water delivery and a pressure regulating station to ensure safe, efficient water movement between pressure zones.

💵 Project Investment: $389,200
📍 Location: Palmer Ave. & Armour Ave.
🔧 Purpose: Control pressure and monitor non-potable water flow between zones

Projects like these may not always be visible, but they play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of our system. By managing pressure and tracking flow, we protect pipelines, improve system performance, and support responsible use of our most precious resource, water.

“Smart infrastructure like this helps us plan for the future while taking care of today’s needs,” said BCVWD Board President Daniel Slawson. “Projects like the new regulating and metering station may not always be visible to the public, but they are essential to keeping our water system running smoothly and efficiently. By managing pressure and monitoring flow between zones, we’re protecting the integrity of the entire system, reducing strain on pipelines, and using water responsibly. It’s just one way we continue investing in the community’s long-term sustainability and resilience.”

Innovation in Action: Heli-Hydrants Are Here!

BCVWD was proud to join regional partners on June 12 at the ribbon-cutting for the first of seven life-saving Heli-Hydrants, developed by the San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency (SGPWA) and funded through the American Rescue Plan Act with support from Supervisor Dr. YxstianGutierrez.

These innovative tank-based systems allow helicopters to refill with water in under 10 seconds, which is a critical advantage during wildfire response. As fires like the Wolf Fire threaten our communities, these new tools help ensure a faster, more effective defense.

👏 We commend SGPWA for their vision, leadership, and commitment to regional safety. BCVWD is proud to support and partner in efforts that strengthen emergency response and protect our residents and resources.

“The Heli-Hydrant project is a shining example of what can be accomplished when regional agencies come together for the good of the community,” said John Covington, BCVWD Board Member. “We’re proud to support forward-thinking solutions like this that prioritize safety and resilience.”

Thank You to Our First Responders!

In July, the Idyllwild Fire Protection District visited our main office to lead a hands-on fire safety training for BCVWD staff. Their team provided classroom instruction and live fire demonstrations that gave our employees the chance to safely practice putting out small fires using fire extinguishers, fire blankets – even baking soda!

We are incredibly grateful for their time, guidance, and expertise, and we appreciate the strong partnerships we continue to build with local first responders. This training builds on similar exercises we’ve had in past years with CAL FIRE / Riverside County Fire Department through the City of Beaumont, and we’re proud to continue this spirit of collaboration.

👩‍🚒👨‍🚒 To all fire professionals who protect our communities, THANK YOU!

“We value the collaboration and dedication of the Idyllwild Fire Protection District and the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District. This recent hands-on training strengthens our team’s readiness and highlights the importance of regional cooperation in protecting our communities,” stated Andy Ramirez, BCVWD Board Member.
